What we teach

Ten Schools, taken in order, one to one, at your own table. Every child begins at School One, whatever their age, and moves on when they have learned it rather than when a calendar says so.

The ten Schools

Each School is a set of modules. Most modules take a single lesson, a few take longer, and each one has a verse to learn by heart. Tap a School to see its modules.

Where churches differ. On 10 subjects, among them Water Baptism, Communion and The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit, churches teach differently. We teach them from our own understanding, set out below under what we believe, and we tell you so before you register.

With a parent in the room. Purity is only ever taught with a parent present, from a script we supply. If no parent can sit in, the lesson is moved to a time when one can.

What a lesson looks like

  • A tutor comes to your home at the time agreed with you, and the lesson lasts about an hour.
  • An adult must be at home for the whole lesson, and the door of the room stays open. If no adult is at home, there is no lesson: the tutor calls the coordinator instead, and is still paid for the journey, so nobody is ever tempted to teach anyway.
  • Each lesson works through a module of the School, with its verse to learn by heart.
  • You get a text when the tutor arrives and when they leave.
  • Afterwards the tutor writes you a short report: what was covered, and one thing to practise at home. A lesson cannot be finished without it. You confirm the lesson happened, or tell us if something was wrong.
  • Online lessons, by video call, happen only if you choose them, and every one is recorded. No recording, no lesson.

How progress is measured, and certificates earned

After every lesson the tutor marks how your child is doing in each of these areas, from one to four:

Biblical Literacy
Knowing the whole counsel of God.
Spiritual Formation
Walking with Christ daily.
Christian Character
Becoming like Jesus.
Kingdom Power
Living in dependence on the Holy Spirit and serving others faithfully.
Biblical Worldview
Thinking biblically about every area of life.
Mission and Leadership
Living to make disciples and influence the world for Christ.

One means not yet, two means getting there with help, three means doing it without help, and four means your child could teach it to somebody else. You see these marks on your page.

  • At the end of each module the tutor checks what has been learned, including the verses, said from memory, and writes down what they found.
  • At the end of each School your child is assessed by somebody who has never tutored them: a coordinator or another tutor. That keeps the marks honest, and gives your child a second trusted adult who knows how they are doing.
  • When your child passes, a certificate is issued, signed by Pastor Daniel Olawande and Pastor Dr Oluwanifemi Olawande. You can download and print it from your page.
  • Schools run in order. A School opens only once the one before it has been passed.

What we believe

Pentecostal

The Bible Home Tutors teaches from a Pentecostal understanding of Scripture. This shapes what we teach on baptism, communion, the gifts of the Spirit, healing, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We say so plainly here so that every family knows what their child will be taught before they enrol.

Version v1.0, in force from Thursday 1 October.

Every family reads this before registering a child, and agrees that their child may be taught from it.

The Bible we use

We teach from the World English Bible, a modern English translation that is free for anybody to use. The memory verses are taken from it. The King James Version, loved in many Nigerian churches, is also used with older children.
